Management of chronic wounds: the role of silver-containing dressings
نویسنده
چکیده
• Non viable wound tissue (slough and/or necrosis). • Lack of healthy granulation tissue (wound tissue may be pale, greyish and avascular). • No reduction in wound size over time. • Recurrent wound breakdown. Numerous molecular and biochemical imbalances are found within the chronic wound environment, including elevated inflammatory cytokines, elevated matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and decreased tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMPs) 1. The cells within the chronic wound exhibit low mitotic activity, senescence and decreased growth factor activity 1; chronic wounds are often referred to as being ‘stuck’ in the inflammatory or proliferative phases of wound healing 3.

The diabetic foot: managing infection using Cutimed Sorbact dressings.
Management of the diabetic foot is often problematic, particularly as the diabetic patient is prone to sub-clinical infections. This article reviews diabetic foot ulceration and its treatment and describes some of the commonly associated complications of these chronic wounds. It is proposed that highly hydrophobic dressings are of value in reducing the bacterial colonization of ulcers, and an e...
متن کاملThe effectiveness of silver-releasing dressings in the management of non-healing chronic wounds: a meta-analysis.
AIM The purpose of this study was to examine the efficacy of silver-releasing dressings in the management of non-healing chronic wounds. BACKGROUND Non-healing chronic wounds often have a negative physical impact on patients and place a financial burden on healthcare systems. Silver dressings are wound products designed to control infection and provide a wound environment conducive to healing...
متن کاملA Scoping Review of the Use of Silver-impregnated Dressings for the Treatment of Chronic Wounds.
Topical silver agents and dressings are used to control infection and promote healing in chronic wounds, but reviews published from 2006 to 2011 found heterogeneous results regarding their effectiveness. A scoping review was conducted to examine the extent, range, and nature of research activity surrounding chronic wound care that employed silver-impregnated dressings; identify research gaps in...
متن کاملUse of a new silver barrier dressing, ALLEVYN◊ Ag in exuding chronic wounds
Recognising and managing wounds at risk of infection is vital in wound management. ALLEVYN Ag dressings have been designed to manage exudate in chronic wounds that are at risk of infection; are displaying signs of local infection; or where a suspected increase in bacterial colonisation is delaying healing. They combine an absorbent silver sulfadiazine containing hydrocellular foam layer, with a...
متن کاملDressing conformability and silver- containing wound dressings
Background: All wounds have unique and irregular topographies, including cavities where fluids and bacteria may collect and increase the risk of wound infection. Aims: To qualitatively and quantitatively investigate the relationship between the physical structure of antiseptic wound dressings and their ability to manage bioburden in models that simulate clinical conditions. Methods: In vitro mo...
متن کاملNanocrystalline silver dressings in wound management: a review
This paper describes the properties of nanocrystalline silver products (Acticoat) and their applications and examines available evidence supporting their use in wound management. Acticoat utilizes nanotechnology to release nanocrystalline silver crystals. Acticoat releases 30 times less silver cations than silversulfadiazine cream or 0.5% silver nitrate solution but more of the silver released ...
